Top 5 Tips for Balancing Fitness and Family Life (Especially During Half Term!)
First of all—well done! If you’ve made it to the end of half term juggling work, kids activities, endless snacks, mountains of washing and the odd bit of movement here and there then bravo!! I can only imagine how much your nervous system needs to reset back to it’s normal routine next week 😂
We had Charlie in a term time nursery for 3 months and I barely survived one half term break before moving him into a more full time setting, so I take my hat off to anyone muddling through that juggle!
I know it can feel impossible to make time for movement outside of running around after the family but maybe, half term workouts should be less about physical exertion and more about you giving some time to clear the mental build up and reset to feel just a wee bit calmer and ready to tackle the chaos.
Here are some ways we might be able to make time for that during these busy periods;
1. Try and schedule your workouts for the week as best you can
I know the days can end up running away with you, but if you’ve got your workouts tagged for the days you are most likely going to be able to complete them, then you’ve already taken a step in the right direction.
2. Involve your kids (where you can!)
If your little ones are home during half term then it’s likely you’ll have to get them involved! I’d opt for a bodyweight only workout that just requires the space of a mat and set it up wherever the most amount of toys in your house are! They’ll probably give you about 5 minutes before they’ll be clambering all over you, but it’s better than nothing!
3. Keep it short & sweet
It’s not the time for a 60 minute workout, we’re looking for short, sweet and effective! A 20 or 30 minute session will probably be the sweet spot to keep your routine ticking over. We just need enough to give you a great boost of energy and help keep your routine consistent.
4. Don’t Be Hard on Yourself
Finally, remember that you’re doing an amazing job. Balancing fitness with family life is a challenge, and it’s okay if you can’t always stick to your ideal routine. Be kind to yourself and celebrate the small wins—whether it’s a workout you squeezed in, the healthy meals you made, or simply taking time to rest when you need it.
