From Beginners to Barre addicts: Why Strength-Focused Barre is for Everyone

When it comes to fitness, it can sometimes feel like you need to be "in the know" before you even step into a class. What’s a flow? Is a tuck a dance move or something you need to pack for lunch? And why is everyone suddenly talking about their core like it’s a separate entity? Sometimes it can feel overcomplicated when really it’s all just about finding a way to move your body that feels good now and also in 20 years time.

Here’s the truth: Barre is accessible, adaptable, and incredibly effective. The way I teach you these movements is all about unpacking them and putting them back together piece by piece so you understand them and it feels less intimidating.

Barre Basics: No Experience Required

If you’ve never tried barre before, you might think it’s just for dancers or the super-flexible but that is absolutely not true! Barre is all about small and controlled movements so you won’t be flinging yourself around a room trying to jeté from one side to the next. To the naked eye, Barre movements can look SO simple but to us shaky participants? We know we couldn’t be working any harder.

Strength-focused Barre classes are designed to meet you where you are in your fitness journey. The idea is that we use a certain level of resistance - be that from weights, resistance bands or bodyweight to add an incredibly impactful level of strength training. But YOU get to decide what that looks like. You can use heavier or lighter weights than your fellow Barre lovers depending on what you need from each workout.*

*Caveat: I will be waiting in the digital wings to give you gentle encouragement to increase your weight level when I feel like you’ve got more in the locker but never pushing you to do something you don’t want to do.

Why Strength Matters (Spoiler: It’s Not Just About Muscles)

Strength is about building resilience in your body. Strength-focused barre classes improve muscle endurance, support joint health, and help with balance and posture. I know that motivation to exercise isn’t necessarily always rooted in those things, sometimes it can be about feeling more confident in our clothes or in a bikini, but I promise you, 80 year old you will be thankful you did it because she’ll still be feeling strong, her joints will be less creaky and she’ll still feel like she’s got some great mobility.

For beginners, my classes introduce you to foundational movements that create a solid base and understanding. For my advanced girlies, the emphasis on precision and intensity in each session takes your workouts to the next level.
